What colors do you need in your life?
I was just reading [yet another] article on a design blog about how colors affect your mood. I think I just might have written about that once or twice! But the reason that it’s such a popular subject is that it is an amazing way to make changes in your life. At one time color therapy was seen as being ‘alternative’ but not now.
Once something is scientifically proved, it leaves the ‘alternative’ sphere and becomes mainstream. What does this have to do with art photography? Well, when you select your artwork, the colors you choose are important. And what’s equally important is the way those colors are going to react in your room and how they are going to make you feel. Let’s take a palette of black, red, yellow and green. Black and red are both strong colors. Black suggests authority and importance. For many people, it’s linked with intelligence too. Red is exciting but it’s also linked with love, romance, warmth and comfort. Yellow is a happy color associated with laughter, sunshine and optimism. Green is the color of nature, freshness, growth and money.
So, if you own a piece of art containing those colors you can decorate your room – often with inexpensive accessories – bringing out the colors that you feel you need in your life. Wanting to add happiness to your room? Use a yellow throw on your sofa to match the yellow in your art and add a bunch of bright yellow flowers. For warmth, comfort and romance, substitute a red throw, a red lampshade and a bowl of shiny red apples. For growth and freshness change your throw for a green one, add a leafy green plant and decorative green candles. If you have important business meetings coming up and want to feel in charge and empowered, you know by now to add a black throw or pillows, a black vase and a black ceramic piece. Of course, you could also paint an accent wall in the color of your choice too [example Sherwin Williams paint colors below] but by using simple, inexpensive accessories, you can change the look and the mood of your room every time you go to the grocery store!
