What are you curating and why?
Almost every business is curating these days. The trouble is that often, they might not be curating the right things and speaking to clients, it seems that some even don’t know why they are curating at all! So I want to remind you that from time to time it’s a good idea to evaluate and ask those very questions. What is my business curating? Why are we doing it? And there are even more questions that you should ask.
The main one, and the most obvious, is to ensure that your curation is adding value to your viewers and potential clients. It’s easy to fall into the trap of being almost on autopilot. One of the problems with this could be the person who is in charge of the task. Some companies that I’ve come across are not using marketers, believe it or not. I have even heard a ‘content curator’ describe her role as ‘putting pretty things on Pinterest’! (And a ‘social media manager who described his job as ‘looking after the company’s Facebook page’. This is true).
What services and systems are you using? Are you using the many widgets available from curation services? Some are great, some should be avoided at all costs. Are you getting kudos from those whose content you share? Have you asked for it? (Surprisingly, some businesses don’t). Similarly, what about your viewers? Have you asked their opinion of your content curation? Have you acted on their remarks?
I am about to add a little curated content now to this rant. It will probably take me about a minute or less.
