Then listen to Google
You’ve often heard me lament that people, when taking advice about internet presence and search engines, would actually rather believe a twenty five year old teckie rather than an old female hippie. I’ve never understood this because what we are talking about here is marketing using the best tool we have at our disposal. But, as I have moaned often, there are those who will take the advice of IT people rather than experienced internet marketers. Ho hum.
However, it’s hard not to pay attention when the search engines themselves tell you exactly what they want.
For some time now, I’ve been ranting about backlinks and how links to your site can harm your search engine presence – not to mention your internet reputation. But because it wasn’t your IT bloke saying it, you didn’t pay attention. In fact. some people even pointed out that Google themselves wanted you to create backlinks.
These people forgot, conveniently, that search engines stressed that these links should be on high quality sites but nevertheless, there were those who went on their way happily believing that any link is a good link.
So yes, I was pretty happy in May 2013 when Google, quietly and subtly changed the wording in their webmaster guidelines. See below:
See it? Google its almighty self is now saying what the hippies have been saying for ages.
