‘Excuse the spelling and grammar….’
Actually, no I won’t. You see, I’m increasingly finding this phrase all over the place and it’s followed by ‘I’m using my phone / tablet’. Someone explain this to me,please? I use these devices regularly but nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that my ability to spell flies out of the window. When I’m writing on my laptop, PC, phone or iPad, I still know when and where to use an apostrophe or hyphen. Just because I’m using my phone, I still know the difference between ‘their’, ‘there’ and they’re’. Strange that, isn’t it?
Why don’t other people? It’s a mystery to me. Who are these people? I’ll admit that an iPhone’s keyboard is a little tiny, especially for older eyes, but that’s why stores sell those $10 reading glasses. And who presses ‘go’ without checking spelling? The phone has auto-correct which neither my laptop or PC does. So why can’t you spell when you’re using your phone?
Phones get blamed for a lot of things these days. Evidently they give your ear cancer (or something) and allow you to take sneaky photographs of naked celebrities (apparently) but why do they remove people’s ability to spell?
Another one of life’s little mysteries….
