Artwork starting from just $9.99!

This was the subject of an email I received the other day. I get a lot of junk mail and was just about to delete it when I stopped and decided to look. Sure enough, the (really badly-designed) email informed me that yes, they had artwork in stock – to suit any wall – with prices starting at under ten bucks.

The email showed five examples none of which were to my taste but another man’s veggieburger … etc. Why I went to the site I’m not sure, but I did and while the painfully slow site was loading, I thought “Hmm, art for 9.99? I doubt it”. Then I completely humbled myself by remembering that Andy walks on the beach at dawn every morning and that the wonderful display that nature provides for us every day is completely and utterly free.

The site did indeed have five prints for sale; the average price being 89.99. The 9.99 ‘art’  was a ‘ceramic’ bowl. But I continued my musing … can art cost $9.99? Yes, of course you can buy a postcard of the Mona Lisa, put it in a cheap frame and, after all, the Mona Lisa is art isn’t it?

I do think though that most of us have a different definition of art!
